The magical cosmic dance
Almost 9 billion years have passed since the Universe came into being. About four and a half billion years ago, a solar system was being fashioned from interstellar gases and stardust in an inconspicuous area of a galaxy called the Milky Way. The star at the centre of this fledgling solar system was our Sun. Soon, the gases surrounding it condensed, and planets formed, occupying orbits around it. The planets closer to the Sun were rocky, while those further away were composed of various gases. About a billion years later, a profound event unfolded on the third planet from the Sun. On this planet, which came to be called Earth, certain large molecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids) formed a self-replicating structure. This was the first cell, a momentous occurrence that signalled the origin of life on the planet.
These nascent life forms had the remarkable ability to reproduce, harness energy from their surroundings, and adapt to changing environments. As time passed, new forms of cells emerged, shaping and impacting the planet itself. An intricate and awe-inspiring choreography of life and the Earth began - a dance that has endured for 3.8 billion years.
We, the inhabitants of this planet, are the descendants of those early cells that arose from the mysterious alchemy of the ancient Earth. Throughout this journey, countless life forms have come and gone, each connected by the magnificent tapestry of DNA, which holds within it the biological saga of Earth itself. This grand odyssey is the story of biology.
There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved.
